Meet the Staff

Barry Swope, MS LPC

Founder and Managing Member

Barry is a Licensed Professional Counselor, and holds a Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Southern Christian University. He enjoys working with families and individuals, and has a special interest in teens and young adults struggling with conduct or emotional challenges. Another specialty for Barry is assisting Physicians and Families with the diagnosis and treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. (AH/HD)

Originally from Birmingham, Al., Barry relocated to the Gulf Coast in 1998. It took less than a year before he began calling himself a "local" and vowing never to leave the beauty of the coast. Barry and his wife Marcia will celebrate 28 years of marriage in August 2008.

Marcia Swope 

Office Manager

 

Marcia is the glue that hold it all together at Focal Point.

She bring a wealth of experience in the medical administration and management field to the office, as well as being the one person that can keep Barry on track.

A native of Birmingham, Marcia enjoys friends, family, and the current edition of American Idol. She is especially attached to her best friend Lucy, who seems to like to watch American Idol as well.  Her most recent  interest is her new granddaughter  Cheyenne, who was born in September of 2007.

Lucy is a three year old Jack Russell/Dachshund mix. She arrived as an orphan, and is allowed to work weekends to earn her keep.  Lucy is a valuable member of the Staff at Focal Point. She is responsible for announcing the arrival of all guests, and for ensuring that no Chameleons ever establish residence in the bushes on the front walk. Lucy possess great skills with empathy and compassion, but is unlicensed as a therapist at this time.

Shelley Collins, MS ALC

Staff Counselor

Shelley is a native of Mobile, and holds a Master of Science in Community Counseling from the University of South Alabama.  Shelley enjoys working with parents and children to help resolve adolescent behavioral challenges. She is also trained to provide counseling to those recovering from traumatic life events such as divorce, grief and loss, family disruptions, and debilitating illnesses.  Shelley has one daughter, and spends her free time enjoying the challenges of keeping up with her daughters busy schedule.

Richard Rodriguez, MA, NCC

Richard holds a Masters in Arts in Mental Health Counseling from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.  He has been a member of the National Board of Certified Counselors since 1996. He has worked with children and families for most of his professional career, specifically working in emotional challenges and interpersonal relationships.  Born in Puerto Rico, he is completely fluent in both Spanish and English.  Richard has two adult sons residing in Florida.  He is currently married to Joni Rodriguez, and they share a home in Daphne. His hobbies include reading, cinema, martial arts, motorcycles, and all manner of home improvement project

Joni L. Rodriguez, MA, LPC

Joni recently moved to the Gulf Coast from Arizona where she is licensed as a Professional Counsleor. Currently she has applied for a transfer of her license, and will begin accepting clients as soon as she is licensed in Alabama. A Michigan native, Joni is a  graduate of Northern Arizona University where she received a BS in political science, and of Prescott College, where she earned a Masters Degree in Counseling - Psychology. Her studies also included extensive classwork in pre-law and criminology. Joni’s  professional career has included rural and metropolitan environments, from small community mental health centers treating children and families to the Maricopa County Correctional Health System in Phoenix treating minimum through maximum security adult male inmates.  Although she is thrilled with living so close to the beach and to family, she much prefers the “dry heat” of Arizona.  She enjoys traveling, arts and crafts, home redecorating, playing with her three “fur children”, learning to cook Puerto Rican fare, and ethnic dancing.

Ellen M. Hanna, LPC

Ellen is a Licensed Counselor in Alabama, and is also holds a  license as a Marriage and Family Therapist in California and is a licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor in Texas. Ellen is an innovative therapist, and has a great deal of experience with children and families. Ellen is willing to provide services after normal hours office hours if needed. Obviously Ellen is a little camera shy. We expect that to improve as she gets to know us.
